The first king of Israel was Abimelek. Check it out in Judges 9:6, "Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo gathered beside the great tree at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king."
It's possible that he was only a regional king, crowned by a few people, but it says in Judges 9:22 that he governed Israel for three years.
So, it's a fun piece of trivia to stump people with. I'll post today's blog tomorrow morning. I finished the reading, but it's a lot to process into a post, and I've just arrived in Indiana for my nephew's birthday.
